How the Process Works
For premium stone projects, we follow a structured sequence before any material leaves the factory:
Step 1 — Slab Scanning Each slab is measured and documented to capture its actual dimensions and surface movement. Natural stone rarely arrives in perfectly uniform sizes, and working from real measurements avoids cutting errors caused by assumed dimensions.
Step 2 — Pre-Cutting Layout Drawing Using the scanned slab data and the project’s shop drawings, we produce a layout plan showing how each finished piece will be positioned and cut. Vein direction, joint lines, and waste minimisation are all considered at this stage.
Step 3 — Client Approval The layout drawing is sent to the contractor or project buyer for review before fabrication begins. This is the point where any changes to sequencing, orientation, or piece sizing can still be made without cost. Once cutting starts, adjustments become significantly more expensive.
Step 4 — Fabrication Cutting proceeds only after the layout is approved. Each piece is produced according to the confirmed plan, with dimensions and edge profiles checked against the project drawings.
Step 5 — Dry Lay Inspection After fabrication, all finished pieces are arranged on the factory floor in their installation sequence. This allows us to verify joint alignment, pattern continuity, and overall visual appearance before anything is packed. Issues identified at dry lay can still be corrected. Issues discovered on site cannot.
Step 6 — Export Packing Pieces are packed in installation sequence where possible, with reinforced crating, surface protection, and clear labelling to reduce damage risk during international shipping.
Which Projects Need This Process?
Not every stone order requires this level of preparation. For standard cut-to-size slab supply or simple tile orders, a straightforward production process is sufficient.
This structured approach is recommended when:
- The project involves bookmatched walls or waterfall island countertops
- Veining direction and pattern continuity are part of the design intent
- Multiple slabs need to read as a continuous surface after installation
- The material is premium quartzite, rare marble, or a stone with strong natural movement
- The project is large enough that errors would be difficult or expensive to correct on site
Why This Step Gets Skipped
The honest answer is time and cost. Producing a pre-cutting layout drawing takes additional coordination between the supplier, the factory, and the client. It adds a step to the timeline and requires the client to review and approve a technical document before production can begin.
For suppliers focused on moving volume quickly, this step is easy to omit. For contractors working with straightforward materials or simple applications, it may not be necessary.
But for projects where the visual result matters — hotel lobbies, luxury residential interiors, high-end commercial spaces — skipping this step is a risk that often costs more to fix than it would have cost to get right the first time.
